Board Membership
The Board of Directors consists of nine elected Directors plus five officers: the President, Vice President, Past President, Executive Director and Treasurer. The latter two (Executive Director and Treasurer) are non-voting members. In addition, by an agreement reached in 1989, the Association of African Studies Programs sends a representative to ASA Board meetings with the status of non-voting observer. That individual is required to absent himself or herself from the discussion of confidential issues.

The Board meets twice yearly, in the Fall and Spring. Two sessions are held in the fall at the time of the annual meeting. One is prior to the beginning of the ASA conference, and the second near the end of the conference. The first meeting is considered a meeting of the Board for the current calendar year. The second meeting is considered a meeting of the Board for the calendar year to come. The Spring Board meeting is held at the site and on a date decided at the time of the second Fall meeting.

Members of the Board of Directors are elected to three-year terms and take office at the Business Meeting of the Asso ciation in the year of their election. Newly elected Board members are invited to observe the first meeting of the Board at the Annual Meeting in the year of their election.
The Bylaws require that Board members receive no com pensation for their service on the Board, but may be reimbursed for expenses incurred in the discharge of their responsibilities. Board members are asked to absorb the costs of their participation on the Board if at all possible (travel to the Annual Meeting and phone and postage costs are most commonly absorbed). Academic institutions sometimes provide a budget for persons elected to membership on the Board or to offices of the Association. If the home institution of Board members cannot absorb costs of participation, reimbursements ar e available according to the following policy:

Board policy permits reimbursement of intercity transportation costs ( not including ground transportation or parking), lodging costs (including tax) and $25 per diem for days that Board members participate in Board meetings. For the fall meeting new Board members receive lodging and per diem for one day but no transportation costs; continuing Board members receive transportation plus three days lodging and per diem; and retiring Board members receive transport ation plus two days lodging and per diem. The spring Board meeting is considered to be two days only and hence a maximum of two per diems may be claimed.

By vote of the Board on 21 November 1991, Board members are to be reimbursed for travel at the lowest available cost, any meals consumed during Board meetings are to be covered by removal of an equivalent sum from the Board per diem and the site of the Spring meeting is to be selected with consideration for economical locations and accommodations.

Reimbursements are not made if Board members do not attend Board sessions. Board members who need to be reimbursed for phone or other costs simply forward their receipts to the Executive Director.
Board members are asked to purchase their air tickets for attendan ce at the Annual Meeting from the official ASA travel agency. Eddie Huckaby reported to the Board in 1984 that the current policy was that "Board members should recognize that Board business takes precedence over any other commitments at the Annual Meeting . Reimbursement for travel to Board Meetings will be made as required, except that Board members who must travel to meetings from outside North America will only be reimbursed in an amount equal to round-trip travel from their normal place of residence in North America." In 1989, when an officer was temporarily resident abroad, the Board agreed that travel reimbursement would be from the point of entry into the continental US.

The Board voted on 10 May 1986 that 1) A Board member is expected to accept the obligation to attend Board meetings. It is the sense of the Board of Directors that two or more anticipated consecutive absences from meetings of the Board should occasion the decline of nomination or resgination of the absent member. 2) A Board member who serves as a member of a standing committee and who for a time will be unable to participate in committee activities and meetings must notify the President of his or her anticipated unavailability. The President, in turn, will direct the Board to replace su ch a member with another Board member until the absent member is able to resume participation in committee work.
