Distinguished Africanist Award

The African Studies Association (ASA) invites its members to nominate individuals for the 2009 Distinguished Africanist Award. The ASA Distinguished Africanist Award recognizes a lifetime of notable contributions to African studies. The Award is presented at the Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony and consists of a plaque and a lifetime membership in the African Studies Association.

Any current member of the ASA is eligible to nominate a candidate for the Distinguished Africanist Award. To nominate a candidate, submit the complete dossier to the ASA Secretariat, postmarked on or before April 1, 2010. The complete dossier of the candidate may be emailed as an attachment to publications@africanstudies.org or mailed to African Studies Association, Distinguished Africanist Award, Rutgers University, Douglass Campus, 132 George Street, New Brunswick, NJ 08901-1400.

The nomination must include:

  • A vita of the nominee
  • A detailed letter of nomination outlining how the nominee meets the criteria for the Award
  • Three similar letters from ASA members supporting the nomination (at least two must be affiliated with institutions other than that of the nominee). A nomination letter may be signed by more than one person but all signatories must be current ASA members.

The ASA Distinguished Africanist Award was established in the 1980's to recognize and honor scholars who have contributed a lifetime record of outstanding scholarship in their respective field of African studies and service to the Africanist community. Criteria for the Award are the distinction of contribution to Africanist scholarship, as measured by a lifetime of accomplishment and service in the field of African studies. Contributions to scholarship within and without the academic community are considered.
