Holm has his PhD from UCLA in African Studies,as well as a masters from the School of Advanced International Studies from John Hopkins University. His colleague and co-author, Malete, has his PhD from Michigan State University in Physical Education and Sports Psychology. Both men have worked at the University of Botswana's Office of International Education and Partnerships, Holm as the former Director, and Malete as his successor. The office boasts partnerships with institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania and Shanghai Normal University in China, as well as exchange programs, for both students and faculty, in the U.S., Germany, China, and many Scandinavian countries.

What both the article and the Office of International Education and Partnerships aim to address are many of the imbalances that exist between African institutions and other instititions from more developed nations.
