January 13, 2015 - The African Studies Association (ASA) is excited to announce a call for participation in our Graduate Student Caucus Steering Committee. In 2014, the ASA Board of Directors approved the creation of a Graduate Student Caucus to facilitate the participation of graduate students in the membership and the leadership of the organization. To this aim, the Graduate Student Caucus will have a member liaison who will serve as a full member of the ASA Board of Directors.

The Graduate Student Caucus Steering Committee will lead the development of new strategies to integrate Graduate Students into the ASA membership and to develop member benefits and programs targeted toward graduate students. The committee will be tasked with creating a proposed set of organizational guidelines, bylaws, and operating principles for the Graduate Student Caucus. The Steering Committee will also select a member to serve as the initial Graduate Student Caucus Representative on the ASA Board of Directors. This representative will attend the Spring 2015 ASA Board of Directors Meeting (to be held in April 2015 at Rutgers University) to participate in the overall meeting and to present the proposed guidelines and principles to the Board.

If you are interested in serving as a member of the Graduate Student Caucus Steering Committee, the ASA will be holding an informative conference call on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 2:00 pm EST. To participate in the call, please email the ASA Program Manager Kathryn Salucka at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.   and call-in information will be provided to you. If you are interested in participating but are unable to make the conference call, please contact Kathryn Salucka and arrangements can be made for you to receive the output of the call. Please note, attending the conference call will not mandate your participation in the steering committee. All steering committee members must be current ASA members and graduate students. If you have not yet renewed your membership for 2015, you may do so online through Cambridge University Press.

The ASA is excited to extend this opportunity to our graduate student members, and look forward to working with you on this initiative.
