IMPORTANT PRELIMINARY PROGRAM INFORMATION

The ASA Secretariat is pleased to announce that the Preliminary Program for the 2005 Annual Meeting, Health, Knowledge, and the Body/Politic in Africa and the African Diaspora, November 17-20, 2005 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, is now available on the ASA website. Please note: the Preliminary Program will not be revised online.

Please note the following important information for program presenters:

I. Payments - As per the March 9 email from President Bruce Berman and Vice President Joseph Miller, Chair of the ASA Annual Meeting Committee, the Board reaffirmed its long-standing ASA policies, including:

No Annual Meeting proposals were forwarded for review by the ASA Program Committee without confirmed payment of pre-registration and/or membership fees.  In the interest of fairness, the Preliminary Program reflects Program Committee assessment only of proposals completed with payment of pre-registration and/or membership fees.

Individuals who wish to confirm ASA payment policies should consult the ASA website at http://www.africanstudies.org/asa_papercallguide2005.html.  The Secretariat follows the considered policies of the ASA membership as established by the elected representatives on the Board of Directors.  In the interest of uniform and equitable application, Secretariat staff cannot change Association policy. Secretariat staff remains available to confirm receipt of proposals and member payments.

II. Revisions and Corrections - Still in the interest of equity, Secretariat staff cannot change Program Committee decisions regarding positioning of papers and composition of panels, based on information submitted to it.

A further advantage of the new online system is its precision. What you will see in this Preliminary Program is based on what panel/roundtable organizers and roundtable participants and paper proposers keyed into the database in March. The text contained a good many typographical errors, incomplete references to institutional affiliations, erratic formatting, and the like. For future Annual Meetings, a style sheet will be provided to assist individuals with this task. This is your opportunity to correct typographical and other technical errors that you may have made in your original submission. READ YOUR PANEL/PAPER LISTING CAREFULLY, and revise - if necessary - according to the following instructions:

  • ONLY TITLE REVISIONS, UPDATED/CORRECTED INSTITUTIONAL AFFILIATIONS, AND TYPOGRAPHICAL AND OTHER TECHNICAL ERRORS IN SUBMISSION WILL BE MADE TO THE PROGRAM.  No panels can be re-organized; no substitutions may be made.
  • Requests for revision of paper or panel titles can be made by sending an e-mail to asaamc@rci.rutgers.edu with the words Title Change in the subject line ON OR BEFORE SEPTEMBER 15. Individuals residing in Africa may also fax their revisions to the ASA Secretariat at 732-932-3394 with the words Title Changein the subject line ON OR BEFORE SEPTEMBER 15, 2005. Please note: NO CHANGES WILL BE MADE AFTER SEPTEMBER 15, 2005.
  • Changes of name and affiliation may also be made in your member record directly online at www.africanstudies.org and by clicking on the ASA ONLINE link. Please enter your name and affiliation exactly as you wish it to appear in the Final Program and on your name badge (e.g., Robert F. Smith, U of Virginia, Boston U, or U of California - Davis).  Changes received on or before September 15, 2005 will be printed in the Final Program which will be available on-site during the Annual Meeting.
  • Absences owing to unforeseeable circumstances should be sent by email to asaamc@rci.rutgers.edu with the word Withdrawal in the subject line ON OR BEFORE SEPTEMBER 15, 2005. Individuals residing in Africa may also fax to the ASA Secretariat at 732-932-3394 with the words Withdrawal in the subject line.  All such notices will be acknowledged in a program addendum that will be distributed at the Annual Meeting.
